A Petrol-Free Norway

April 29th, 2009 § 0

Norwegian Finance Minister, Kristin Halvorsen, and her Socialist Left Party have put forth a plan that would disallow the sale of new cars that run solely on gasoline after 2015.

Under the plan new cars such as hybrids, that run partially on gas, would still be allowed to be sold in the country, but any cars that only use gas as their power source would be illegal. Cars already on the road would be unaffected.

Invisible Children presents: The RESCUE on April 25th

If you haven’t already heard about these guys, then check out: http://www.invisiblechildren.com/

Invisible Children is an organization dedicated to ending Africa’s longest-running war and they are going global for their third and largest Awareness Event to date: a 100-city, nine country rally called the RESCUE, to demand attention for the plight of children abducted and forced to fight as soldiers in the Lord’s Resistance Army, terrorizing Central East Africa over the last two decades.

To my knowledge, there are four events running in Australia:
Brisbane, Sydney, Melbourne and Perth. I’m helping to plan the Brisbane event, so get your butt down there! I know its Anzac day, but what better way to honour how the generations before us fought for our freedom, by being a generation willing to fight for the freedom of children in Africa. Lets not be a generation defined by apathy and indifference, lets be the generation who says “enough is enough.”

Freeganism

April 2nd, 2009 § 2

Who says there’s no such thing as a free lunch?

from http://freegan.info/

“Freeganism is an anti-consumerism lifestyle whereby people employ alternative living strategies based on limited participation in the conventional economy and minimal consumption of resources. Freegans embrace community, generosity, social concern, freedom, cooperation, and sharing in opposition to a society based on materialism, moral apathy, competition, conformity, and greed.

The lifestyle involves salvaging discarded, unspoiled food from supermarket dumpsters that have passed, or in some cases, haven’t even passed their sell by date, but are still edible and nutritious. They salvage the food not because they are poor or homeless, but as a political statement.

The word “freegan” is a blend of “free” and “vegan”. Freeganism started in the mid 1990s out of the anti-globalization and environmentalist movements. Groups such as Food Not Bombs served free vegetarian and vegan food that was salvaged from food market trash by dumpster diving.”
